Private Island by Scott Hale

Every fly fisher owns a private island, at least for a little while. It’s something we do – those of us who don’t own riverfront in the official eyes of the government. We go on our little outings, and we take over some of the space for a time that the government thinks is “public”. And without their knowing it, we wield our 9′ fiberglass swords and declare that plot of ground and all navigable water running through it to be our own sovereign nation. At the end of the day, we quietly re-sheath our weapons, and whisper to the nation that they may borrow our newly conquered territory…until we come back again another time. May it always be so.
