Like a glance from a pretty girl or a wave from a beauty queen… a quick flick of the tail on the surface drives us crazy. Tucked in the safety of the Spartina grass this Redfish was up on tail and feasting on some crabs. Before we stalked in on the grass flat, I grab [...]

Looking for tailing redfish is a waiting game. I spotted a tailing fish and jump out of the boat to get a better angle. As soon as I got in position the fish disappeared. I stuck around and waited while Allan went back to the boat for a better view.

We were out on a high tide grass flat waiting for fish and hoping for a bit more light. There is such a small window when you get shots, you have to be on your game. That night I was not on my game.

Different than carp… I was amazed at how stealthy these fish are. You would never see a fish move up onto the flat, all of a sudden a tail would pop up. You had to stand and wait. It felt like an eternity until we saw the first one, and then it was on. While [...]

I had a great opportunity to fish for tailing redfish in the grass last week. Met some great people a got a glimpse of what they do and how they do it. The wind was blowing a steady 18mph at the ramp as we got set up. We all jumped over to an old look-out [...] -

The 90+ degree heat the first week of July put me in the basement tying room for some temperature relief. The weekend of the 4th I decided it was time to start steelhead for fall ’10. I milled over my boxes and trays and plucked the disasters that never saw water. I can’t believe that [...] -

Sometimes the stars align and things just work out. family reunion in philly and a “bachelor week” on a remote lake in the northern Adirondacks… back to back. I schemed and plotted, by there was no way the wife and i could do the reunion and then have me peel off to NY. I was [...] -

The geography of Pittsburgh is unique and allows for amazing views from the Mt. Washington on the south side of the city. This was a 3 shot HDR on a clear evening in early June.

The Cathedral of Learning is the landmark building at the University of Pittsburgh. This 42 story building towers over the student union in the foreground. This shot was a quick 3-shot handheld HDR I took while on a location scout in early June.

I usually find them while they are crawling or with the first 12-24hrs. I have never had one really dig it… which i’m pretty happy about. -

I usually grab them with a pair of tweezers (or forceps) and give a pull. Some people will try to burn them off… but this will cause them to only burrow deeper.

With a crazy spring of 80* days bookended with freeze warnings and a nonstop cyle of weekend rain, summer had not truly arrived. But the past two weeks have changed that. Hot, humid, and oh yeah HOT. But, last Saturday, finding my first (and then second through fifth) ticks of the season marked summers arrival. Last [...] -

So the last few weeks have been SLOW. I don’t know if it is the fall out from a crazy obsessed steelhead season or just life getting in the way. The weather has not been co-operating with my weekend warrior plans. But, today is different… 6:30am and the coffee pot is almost full. Those last [...] -
